Scope Drift Drill

Catch the question before it becomes an assumption.

Two fictional quote-review exercises for small-contractor teams. Practice separating written inclusions from unresolved boundaries, not judging trade competence.

Read. Question. Then compare.

  1. Read all four messages in one case. Start the timer and write your review before opening its key.
  2. For each concern, cite the exact words and ask a clarification question. Do not silently turn ambiguity into included work.
  3. Stop timing, reveal the key and self-score: one point per seeded boundary supported by both evidence and a question. Six per case, twelve total. Other justified observations can be useful too.
  4. Export notes before closing. Nothing is saved or sent automatically. Reloading clears your work.

Synthetic training only. Not legal, contract, trade, safety or estimating advice. A score does not certify competence or contract completeness. No real-project or contractor validation is claimed.

The room repaint

Customer request

Please repaint the study, including the woodwork, before the furniture delivery.

Original quote

Paint the four study walls with two finish coats. Prepare surfaces as needed. Use the customer-selected light neutral. Woodwork to match. Work planned for Friday.

Change message

Revised scope

Study repaint, including woodwork and door, at the previously quoted total. Friday completion remains planned.

Review the six seeded boundaries · Case P

Stop timing first. Tick only boundaries supported in your initial notes. Each point needs both a cited passage and a clarification question; reading this key is not an initial-review success.

P1 · Preparation

Prepare surfaces as needed.

Ask: Which repairs and preparation steps are included, and what condition triggers a separate agreement?

Text supports: Preparation is mentioned; its extent is not defined.

P2 · Colour and coverage

Use the customer-selected light neutral.

Ask: Does the revised scope confirm deep blue, and are extra coats or materials included if needed?

Text supports: Two finish coats are stated for the original wall scope; deep-blue coverage is not resolved.

P3 · Woodwork boundary

Woodwork to match.

Ask: Which woodwork pieces, faces and finishes are included, and what does match mean?

Text supports: Woodwork is named, but its item list and finish are unspecified.

P4 · Door boundary

including woodwork and door

Ask: Which door, which faces, frame and edges are included?

Text supports: A door is included in the revision, not an identified set of surfaces.

P5 · Delivery deadline

The furniture now arrives at noon Friday.

Ask: Is completion required before noon, and what access or drying-time arrangements are agreed?

Text supports: Friday is planned; a before-noon commitment is not established.

P6 · Price and assent

at the previously quoted total

Ask: Has the revised colour, door work and preparation basis been accepted by both parties at this total?

Text supports: The revision states a total basis, but no acceptance message or detailed changed-work price basis is supplied.

CASE C · FICTIONAL COMPOSITE

The closet installation

Customer request

Fit a simple closet in the spare-room recess, with hanging space and shelves for storage bins.

Original quote

Supply and fit a standard closet unit to the recess. Include one hanging rail and shelves to suit. White finish. Installation on Tuesday, subject to room readiness.

Change message

Please make space for the tall bins and use soft-close doors. There is a socket behind the old unit; can you deal with that while you are here?

Revised scope

Closet unit with rail, shelves and soft-close doors. White finish as discussed. Tuesday installation. Electrical work excluded.

Review the six seeded boundaries · Case C

Stop timing first. Tick only boundaries supported in your initial notes. Each point needs both a cited passage and a clarification question; reading this key is not an initial-review success.

C1 · Dimensions and fit

a standard closet unit to the recess

Ask: What measured unit and recess dimensions, clearances and infill are agreed?

Text supports: A unit and recess are identified, but dimensions and fitting tolerances are not.

C2 · Storage layout

shelves to suit

Ask: How many shelves, at which heights, and what tall-bin dimensions must the layout accommodate?

Text supports: Shelves are included, but their count, positions and bin clearances are unresolved.

C3 · Door specification

soft-close doors

Ask: What door count, configuration, hardware and opening clearances are included?

Text supports: Soft-close doors are included; their detailed specification is not established.

C4 · Finish boundary

White finish as discussed.

Ask: Which surfaces and components receive which white finish, and is any site touch-up included?

Text supports: White is stated; the finish system and covered surfaces are not documented.

C5 · Socket interface

Electrical work excluded.

Ask: Who arranges any socket work, and must it be completed before fitting without obstructing access?

Text supports: Electrical work is expressly excluded; coordination and readiness remain unresolved. Do not treat it as included.

C6 · Readiness and timing

Installation on Tuesday, subject to room readiness.

Ask: What constitutes room readiness, including removal of the old unit, and is Tuesday still conditional?

Text supports: The original date is conditional. The revision supplies a date but does not expressly resolve readiness or removal.
